‘Campursari’ maestro Manthous dies from stroke

Singer-songwriter Manthous, also known as Sumanto, died after undergoing medical treatment for a heart condition in Pamulang, South Tangerang, at 6:30 a.m. on Friday. He was aged 60.

The campursari (traditional songs covered in a modern style) star’s body is being taken to his hometown in Playen, Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, and will be buried there on Saturday.

Manthous, who was the leader of the Gunung Kidul Campursari Group (SCGK), died after undergoing medical treatment at hospital for a heart problem he had suffered for eight years.

Word of Manthous' death was sent via SMS by theater artist Bondan Nusantara, a close acquaintance of the singer.

Manthous, known for his knack of creating lyrics that bring the daily lives of people into his campursari songs, mostly in Javanese, has composed many songs.

Among his most popular songs are “Anting-Anting” (Earrings), “Esemu” (Your smile), “Gethuk” (Rice cake), “Jamilah, Kangen” (Missed), “Konco Tani” (Farmer's friend), “Mbah Dukun” (Shaman) and “Nginang Karo Ngilo” (Chewing betel leaf in front of mirror). (dhe)
